The Debate Continues over the Dangers of Chiropractic Manipulations

Over the last 10 years, there’s been considerable debate over whether or not spinal manipulations are dangerous. The initial debate was whether spinal manipulations are actually effective. Over 10 years ago, multiple research studies showed the effectiveness of chiropractic manipulations for treatment of acute low back pain.

Once this research was published, most insurance companies started providing coverage for chiropractic manipulation. At that point, chiropractic treatment in the US blossomed considerably and at any one point in time approximately 12% of the US population is under the care of a chiropractor.

Multiple studies have been done looking at the patient satisfaction from chiropractic treatment, and the results show that 85 to 87% of those receiving chiropractic treatment are satisfied with their care. The biggest concern over the effectiveness with chiropractic treatment involves manipulations of the neck. In the low back, the debate has been neutralized from the research that was done showing effectiveness and leading up to widespread insurance coverage.

The risk of a devastating complication from a chiropractic neck manipulation is somewhere between one in 1,000,000 and 2 million. Complications may include neurologic injury or a stroke. Obviously these are devastating injuries, but the argument on those in favor of chiropractic neck manipulations is that these individuals have a predisposing condition such as a vascular blockage leaving up to be complication.

The incidence of complications with chiropractic manipulation is in fact very low, but because of the severity of it it receives a lot of press. Therefore, the debate will not be going away anytime soon.
